New Brunswick's 8 Long Term Missing Children: The Faces We Must not Forget

Remembering Canada’s Long Term Missing Children: Stories from Every Province and Territory Series

This post is the second in a series where I will highlight the long-term missing children from each province and territory in Canada.

Because there are so many cases to cover, it will take time to research and write more in-depth profiles for each child. Those longer posts will come in the future, but for now, this series is about getting their names out there and reminding everyone that these children have not been forgotten.

Please join me in sharing these stories. Awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have to help bring them home.

Michelle Lise Wedge, 7 - missing from Moncton - 2 July 1975

Blue background with text: "Michelle Wedge, Moncton, 2 July 1975, 7 years old." A smiling child’s black-and-white photo. "We the Missing" logo. Mood: nostalgic.

The oldest case in New Brunswick, and the youngest child still missing in that province, is Michelle Lise Wedge.

At around 8:40pm on July 2, 1975, Michelle Wedge's older brother heard his seven-year-old sister leave the family home on Dominion Street in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada to ride her bicycle. Their parents were out for the evening. At 9pm, their older sister arrived home and noticed that Michelle was no longer playing near the home where her brother had last seen her. The two searched the neighbourhood and found her bicycle, propped on its kickstand, at the southwest corner of the intersection of Dominion and John Street, but no Michelle.

Donna Chambers, 17 - missing from Carlingford - 27 February 1976

Blue background with text "Donna Chambers," "Carlingford." Includes a black and white photo, date "27 February 1976," age 17, and colorful logo.

I will have to do some digging into the disappearance of Donna Chambers. Right now, the only two sources I can find listing her disappearance are:

  1. Canada's Missing (The RCMP site)

  2. A short post in the Telegraph Journal Newspaper in Saint John, New Brunswick on March 6, 1976, more than a week after she was last seen. This post contains the only photo I have been able to find of Donna Chambers.

Newspaper clipping about a missing girl named Donna Chambers. Includes a black-and-white photo and text detailing her description and last seen attire.

According to the RCMP site, Donna was reported missing on February 27, 1976 from Carlingsford, New Brunswick. They state that she had been walking from her house to the local dump and was picked up in an unknown vehicle. Why would she be walking to the dump? Did someone see her being picked up in this vehicle? Did she get in willingly? Are they inferring she was hitchhiking? They also add that Donna was never located although the belief was she had gone to live in the USA voluntarily.

Martin Corbet, 17 - missing from Bartibog Station - 15 November 1979

Missing person poster with Martin Corbet’s name in bold. Date: 15 November 1979, age 17. Background is blue with brown accents.

17-year-old Martin Corbet, from Paspebiac, Quebec, was visiting his older brother, Christian, who was at the Bartibog Station, relieving the rail depot attendant for the week. On November 15, 1979, Martin entered the bush late in the morning, lightly clad, armed with a shotgun. Bartibog Junction is at the point where the main Canadian National Railway line is joined by the spur line into Heath Steele Mines. Located midway between Bathurst and Newcastle, it is a heavy wooded area not accessible by road. In fact, the searchers had to travel by train to the search area to look for Martin.

Footprints revealed that Martin had followed the railway tracks northward for 1.5 miles from where he had entered the bush at Bartibog Junction Station. Tracking dogs picked up his scent right away, which indicated Martin had travelled in circles. Despite a systematic ground search of a six square mile area adjacent to the railway line, no articles of clothing, his shotgun, or Martin himself, were found.
